Synopsis
In a town where tuberculosis decides the length of a life, two poets decide its meaning.
Zonguldak, a small mining town on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, during the Second World War. Rustu Onur and Muzaffer Tayyip Uslu are young men of uncommon talent, poets whose work is beginning to reach beyond the provincial newspapers into the literary circles of Istanbul. They are also both sick. Tuberculosis, the disease that shaped an entire generation of artists, has settled in their lungs. The question is not whether they will die young but what they will leave behind.
The two friends share everything: their ambitions, their manuscripts, their small apartment, and, inevitably, their affections for the same woman, Suzan. Belcim Bilgin plays her not as the object of a romantic triangle but as a person with her own life and her own understanding of what it means to love someone whose time is visibly running out. The film treats the triangle with gentleness rather than melodrama. There is no betrayal. There is simply the recognition that the heart does not organize itself around fairness.
Director and writer Yilmaz Erdogan, one of Turkey's most accomplished filmmakers, draws from the real lives of the poets whose work helped define modern Turkish literature. The film is careful with period detail, the coal town, the wartime shortages, the literary cafes, but it is ultimately about the inner life: what it costs to write honestly, what it means to know your work will outlive you, and what friendship looks like when time is not on your side.
The Butterfly's Dream was selected as Turkey's official submission to the 86th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. Its score by Rahman Altin won the Public Choice Award at the World Soundtrack Awards, Film Fest Gent. Massimiliano "Max" Musina served as Consulting Producer.
